Drepung Monks Sand Peace Mandala

A world peace sand mandala created by the Drepung Gomang Monks during their Sacred Arts Tour. This tour has a four-fold purpose:

To make a contribution to world healing and peace by sharing unique Tibetan Buddhist teachings, sacred religious performances, chanting, and Tibet's unique identity and treasures of culture and authentic traditions.

To offer prayer with all:  “Recognizing well, and very deeply, that there have been great tragedies in every part of the world, we want to share our sympathy and prayers together with you as human beings sharing this planet and sharing the future of this home of ours.”

To generate a greater awareness of the endangered Tibetan civilization and human rights abuses by the Communist Chinese since 1959. As the situation in Tibet is becoming more desperate by the day, due to massive displacement of Tibetans by Chinese citizens sent there by the Communist government, and ever new rules and difficulties, especially at the monasteries, we need your help now.

To raise support for the refugee monks' community in south India for proper food, improvement in health and hygiene and for providing better education facilities for the monk students. Here's an informational video:

The Historical Peace Symbol

In 1958, British artist Gerald Holtom drew a circle with three lines inside, intending the design to be a symbol for the Direct Action Committee Against Nuclear War (DAC).

The design incorporates a circle with the lines within it representing the simplified positions of two semaphore letters (the system of using flags to send information great distances, such as from ship to ship). The letters "N" and "D" were used to represent "nuclear disarmament." (The "N" is formed by a person holding a flag in each hand and then pointing them toward the ground at a 45 degree angle. The "D" is formed by holding one flag straight down and one straight up.)

Holtom finished his design on February 21, 1958 and the design was then first introduced to the public at a DAC march on April 4. The symbol quickly spread. In Britain, the symbol became the emblem for the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND), thus causing the design to become synonymous with nuclear disarmament. In 1960, the symbol migrated to the United States and began to be used as a symbol for the peace movement.

This symbol has become internationally recognized and is still used by peace activists today.

The Crown Chakra

The Crown Chakra is located near the inside of the top of the head or slightly above your head and corresponds to the connection of Divine energy. It is the highest energy vibration. It is affected by prayer, meditation, and one's feelings toward the Diety. Any extra external energy you need for cleansing purposes come through this chakra.

When this chakra is constricted or out of balance, you may experience: Depression, obsessional thinking, confusion, Sensitivity to pollution, chronic exhaustion, epilepsy, and/or Alzheimer's.

The Crown chakra lies at the top of the head, it is home to our pure spirit, this is where we become one with the divine. As we go through our darkest times, and tragic things happen, and when we been disillusioned by material gains, we search for something to answer our calls, this is when we start to look within for the answers we seek. When we find that inner peace we become whole again. ‘To simply be.’ A feeling of oneness.

Thoughts from the Peace Pilgrim

There is a criterion by which you can judge whether the thoughts you are thinking and the things you are doing are right for you. The criterion is: Have they brought you inner peace? If they have not, there is something wrong with them, so keep seeking! If what you do has brought you inner peace, stay with what you believe is right.
