Relaxed and Centered

I love how cats seem to totally understand the fine art of being completely relaxed and centered within a circle. It's a meditation, an art form of sorts, that only cats achieve.

OK... this guy doesn't look all that relaxed, 

but he is definitely in the zone, and completely centered.

And I simply couldn't resist this one.

The Hunter and the Bird

A hunter once caught a small bird. "Master," said the bird, "you have eaten so many animals bigger than I without assuaging your appetite. How can the flesh of my tiny body satisfy you? If you let me go, I will give you three counsels: one while I am still in your hand, the second when I am on your roof, and the third from the top of a tree. When you have heard all three, you will consider yourself the most fortunate of men.

The hunter agreed. "The first counsel is this," said the bird. "Do not believe the foolish pronouncements of others." The bird then flew onto the roof, from where it gave the second counsel, "Have no regrets for what is past."

"Concealed in my body is a precious pearl weighing 5 ounces. It was yours by right, and now it is gone." Hearing this, the man began to bewail his misfortune.

"Why are you so upset?" asked the bird. "Did I not say, Have no regrets for what is past? Are you deaf, or did you not understand what I told you? I also said, Do not believe the foolish pronouncements of others. I weigh less than two ounces, so how could I possibly conceal a pearl weighing five? "

Coming to his senses, the hunter asked for the third counsel. "Seeing how much you heeded the first two, why should I waste the third?" replied the bird.

Fertility Mandalas

These beautiful batik mandala paintings depict the Shiva Linga encompassed by the Lotus Flower. The Linga is representative of the "divine phallus" and fertility. Mandala of Auspicious Elements

This mandala is rich in symbolism and is directly connected to the kohbar wall paintings for auspicious marriage. This painting, and many more can be found at Exotic India.

The parrots symbolize the love birds and they feature constantly as images of the bride and bridegroom in folk songs and poetry. They are an inseperable element in Maithila paintings representing the happy lovers. Encircling the parrots is a ring of fishes, brightly coloured in variety of patterns. The fishes are emblems of fertility and proliferation and thus an essential symbol of 'kohbar' paintings. Beautiful drawn and painted lotus flowers occupy the remaining space. The lotus signifies fertility and auspiciousness. since, it is associated with goddess Lakshmi, it is personified as the bride desirous of the qualities possessed by the goddess.

A seed

Madhubani Mandala Art

The wall paintings of Madhubani are a queer mixture of aestheticism, ecstasy and sex. Put here on paper are some of the same representations.

The major part of the painting has a circle of yantras representing different gods and goddesses. It is the influence of Tantra on the religious scene. The Kali Yantra, Sri Yantra etc. form the conglomeration of yantras, akin to mandalas, a symbol in Tantrik art....
